Dear Parents and Guardians of St. Pat’s students:

Welcome to another school year. A special welcome to new parents of grade 8 students and parents of new students from other NWT schools and  communities and beyond! We are so pleased to have you at our school and the staff and administration are determined to make your child’s experience at St. Pat’s a rewarding one where your child will reach his or her  potential. I would like to take this opportunity to advise you of some changes and some upcoming events.

YCS District office has approved the following revision to our assessment policy with the intention of making students more responsible in submitting work on time. The major changes are listed below and will be shared with students in their first period classes and at grade level meetings next week. If you wish to view the entire YCS Assessment Policy you may do so on our website as esphs.nt.ca. In addition, I would welcome and of your inquiries and feedback.

“ Teachers may use their professional discretion in assigning a zero when they deem it is warranted. In such  cases, teachers should be able to demonstrate that parents have been contacted and that students have had ample opportunity and adequate support in completing any such project or assignment.”

“ Students have up to one week following  the end of a unit or chapter to hand in an assignment. Following this time, teachers may use their professional discretion in assigning a zero.”

“When an assignment or project is late, the onus is on the teacher to connect with, support, and attempt to establish an alternate due date for students.”

An important part of the assessment process is timely feedback from your child’s teachers and teachers are well aware that this feedback should occur within one week after a due date or test administration.

Communication is another key component for your child’s success. Many of you may already have passwords that allow you to access Powerschool  (our school information system) where you can view your child’s attendance and marks and change their demographics. (phone numbers, e mail addresses) If you are new and do not have this access please call the school secretaries at 873 4888 to obtain a password and instructed how to obtain access. We also have an automated system, School Messenger, that phones you if your child is missing morning or afternoon classes. In order to receive these messages it is important that you inform us of phone or e mail changes.
