English Language Arts

The goals of the senior high school English program are to promote an understanding and appreciation of literature while enabling each student to understand and appreciate language. Students will be challenged to use language confidently and competently for a variety of purposes, with a variety of audiences and in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction and learning. All English courses are 5 credits per course.

Several English course streams are available at École St. Patrick High School.

The 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1 sequence is considered the academic stream preparing students destined for university. The focus of the English 10-1, 20-1, and 30-1 courses is to develop the students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing analytical skills.

The 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 sequence is considered the general stream preparing students going to college. The focus of the English 10-2, 20-2, and 30-2 course sequence is to help prepare students in the practical applications of English with a greater degree of emphasis on responses to print and non-print texts other than literary texts.

The 10-3, 20-3, and 30-3 sequence is considered the non-academic stream. These courses still work at improving students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing skills but they do not lead towards a high school diploma.

Advanced Placement Courses

The Advanced Placement Program enables students to pursue college/university level studies while in high school. Based on their performance in class, students can earn three high school credits for Pre-AP 10, Pre-Ap 20 and AP 30. In addition, based on their performance on the AP examinations (AP 30), students can earn credits for a university course.

Both Advanced Placement Language and Composition and the Pre-Ap courses are open to all who are willing to commit to the challenging course of study.

These courses are designed to support high school English Language Arts students who commit to engage in a rigorous study of effective language use on an advanced level. Critical reading, analysis and writing academic essays in a number of forms such as narration, exposition, analysis, and argumentation are basic requirements. Students study and employ a variety of rhetorical styles and strategies employed by ancient, modern and contemporary writers on a variety of topics. Though a majority of content to be studied is non-fiction, the course also inspects and emulates poetry and other strong fictional works of literary merit.
